The term "Green Sand" is used to describe the sand used to form the sand molds. The sand is in a "green" or uncured/wet state. Green Sand is actually black in color and is a compilation of materials including silica, bentonite (clay) and water. The Green Sand is reclaimed and reused.
Matchplate tooling is a common plate in which the cope pattern is mounted on the upper side, the drag pattern on the underside. The Automatic Molding process utilizes one-time-use sand molds. Green Sand is blown into the flasks and tightly packed against both sides of the matchplate. The cope and drag machine flasks are then separated and the matchplate is extracted creating impressions in the sand. The cope and drag flasks are put back together forming a sand mold into which the aluminum is poured. Prior to closing the mold, sand cores can be inserted into the mold to form hollow passage ways or to cast intricate geometry that cannot be formed by the matchplate tooling.
Advantages of the Automatic Sand Casting process include inexpensive matchplate tooling and quick changeovers/set-ups resulting in an economical casting solution for lower volume production needs.

Our Sand Casting Division utilizes a fully integrated Green Sand handling and reclamation system along with a dedicated Sand Laboratory for monitoring the sand moisture content and compactability to ensure consistent quality castings. Core Making and Heat Treating processes are performed in-house.
